And he hasn't put the sources he used for some of his claims. It baffles me how someone like this can talk about the Balkans and Kosovo yet doesn't know much about it's history. What this guy is doing is giving credit to a bunch of false history. Noel Malcolm, Schmitt and Frederick Anscombe have written better books on this region. Even books written by Albanians themselves are more accurate than most of these foreigners.

It was an interesting discussion. However, armies always rampage through Europe every 80-100 years, that usually involve Russia, so what is new? This may be a scarier iteration in the atomic age, but each time Europe has reconstructed itself and comeback. And possibly in the next iteration of Europe, a "buffer zone" or series of "buffer states" is created between Russia and Europe, that is strictly adhered to by both sides. As an American living in Lithuania, I am especially struck by this speech. In the US, and many other "Western" European nations, we mistake freedom for the ability to offend college students, carry a dangerous weapon, or, as Oleksandra Matviichuk says, "choose between many cheeses." Freedom has been coded as this relic of the enlightenment era, that is seen as "decadent." However, I'd argue that the events of this past year or so have shown that the only decadence I see are those that say that our primary problems in the world are "too much freedom." Sure, maybe maximal autonomy in all circumstances is not really the 'end goal,' we should value family, community and truth more so than 'maximal autonomy.' This is partly a dilemma. However, understanding the richness and value of true self-determination, agency, freedom is paramount. The peak of decadence is begging for a return to repressive paternalism, sitting from the perch of a free society. The free world may have its genuine difficulties, however, this pales in comparison to the alternatives.
